World of Symbols I: The First Ritual

Nature carves out another species
Mutating its predecessors’ forms
A change in phenotypical expression
The ecosystem once again transforms.

Evolution passes by natural selection,
In every niche the organism strives to reach perfection,
Without even perceiving its reflection,
This clump of cells grows deeper in complexion.

Each new deformity inserts a new distortion.
Increased contortions crease the body as it grows.
And energy seeps through the membrane soaring in proportion,
Until it stalls and reproduction slows.

Slowly the systems reach their own sharp thresholds,
And surplus hence becomes an accursed share.
Backstopped by simple need for release,
Excess in movement vents the energy to spare.

Over and over, bodies shift in their expression,
Of dance and play and other wasteful joy,
Repeated movement forms its own confession,
Carves out the symbols meaning shall employ.

That which is waste inverts the sacred systems,
Which nature, evolution made its place,
In Beast, first dominated by the simple instincts.
New rituals, distinct and meaningful replace.
